First Touch’s current major fundraising campaign is for an excellent new form of ventilation for our babies; 3 ground-breaking Maquet Servo-N ventilators, at a total cost of £90,000.
The nnu’s Dr Donovan Duffy explains the need for the fundraising and the devices:
‘’At the beginning of 2020 the neonatal unit took delivery of 14 new Maquet Servo-N devices which St George’s Trust funded to replace our aging but ever reliable Stephanie ventilators, which we are phasing out. .
These new devices offer massive benefits to the babies. Because they are able to deliver ventilation, non invasive ventilation, CPAP and high flow all from one device they are very efficient and avoid equipment changes which can be stressful for the baby. They also employ a novel technology which St George’s nnu is the first unit in the UK to use extensively for premature babies. NAVA (neurally adjusted ventilatory assist) adjusts support levels precisely according to the baby’s diaphragm movement and offers babies greater comfort, with less sedation needed and higher extubation success rates. St George’s Dr Sandeep Shetty has described this in papers and St George’s continue to document this as a centre which is accumulating the most experience with NAVA. The new Maquet devices have proved very successful and we are keen that as many babies as possible on our nnu can have access to them.”
With Covid and other financial pressures, the Trust is currently unable to fund more Maquet Servo-Ns and First Touch is very excited to have been asked by nnu staff to help with this important project.
